The purpose of this project is to develop a shared vision and a strategic plan for sustainable exploitation of the natural resources of the Pongolo River and its floodplain. It is hoped that the plan will be supported by the diverse range of stakeholders who are presently competing for water resources. The study will evaluate present conditions within the floodplain and make an assessment of the likely consequences of increased agriculture on the environment and the livelihoods of the approximately 80,000 people presently utilising the resources of the floodplain wetlands (Jaganyi, 2002).
