This is a new program which builds on previous work Bioversity did in WLE, particularly in Ethiopia as part of the Nile region flagship. It aims at identifying practices and uses of genetic diversity and biodiversityfor multiple benefits, including restoration, food security and nutrition. A number of tools will be used to identify those species in Tanzania and Ethiopia. The program will address land restoration using an integrated approach and, together with partners, will identify options that can provide multiple benefits to local communities. the program recognizes that often poverty is the ultimate cause of degradation and if this is not addressed and recognized it will problematic to have options adopted unless they are linked to income generation and livelihood improvement. In this respect the program will look at livelihood as an integral part of the program activities. Overall the program will aim at enhance food and nutrition security, soil quality by promoting CSA, and livelihood.
