Placing sustainability at the heart of agricultural development

UNESCO-IHE, Delft, Holland

WLE and UNESCO-IHE will host a roundtable discussion on June 14, 2016 on the UNESCO-IHE premises in Delft, Holland.

The round-table will bring together representatives from WLE and several other CGIAR research programs, Dutch organizations as well as invited guests from Europe to dialogue on the topic of sustainability and agriculture and the importance of sustainable intensification for achieving the SDGs. More specifically, the roundtable aims to leverage the collective knowledge of these organizations to identify future solutions and collaborative opportunities that support a transition to sustainable intensification of agricultural systems for poverty alleviation and livelihood improvement.

The specific objectives are to:

  • Share emerging results from WLE with Dutch partners and other collaborators related to integrated natural resource management and sustainability
  • Identify concrete gaps in our knowledge and potential solutions to ensure intensification of agriculture is contributing to sustainable and inclusive development.
  • Identify synergies between the CGIAR research programs and Dutch organizations for further collaboration.

Through presentations and interactive sessions, the participants will share existing and explore new, innovative solutions for sustainable intensification that reduce risks and increase resilience of vulnerable communities. Tentative thematic areas for discussion include increasing water productivity, sustaining rural-urban linkages, regenerating degraded landscapes, and enhancing resilience to climate change and other shocks.
