'People & the Planet' website is an excellent educational resource and gateway into all the issues connecting people and the environment. The website includes 15 key topics covering population, environment, health,consumption and sustainable development. Each key topic is is introduced with an up-to-date authoritative Overview, together with Feature Articles,Facts and Figures, News, Links, Glossary and Book and Film reviews. The web site of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) provides information on environmental legislation and international conventions and access to the UNEP Library and Documentation Centre. The UNEP.Net allows you to search a number of environmental web sites by keyword, country or general topic. UNEP's GRID web site gives access to environmental maps, publications, data sets and other resources.

The web site of IUCN's Wetlands and Water Resources Programme provides regularly updated wetland news and on-line access to many of IUCN's publications on wetlands

WWF's Living Waters Campaign offers fact sheets on wetland and river ecosystems, feature articles on different aspects of wetland management, access to publications and a photo gallery.

Wetlands International web site offers maps and profiles of Ramsar convention wetlands; a wetland 'inventory' which includes access to reports, bibliographies and databases on wetlands and wetland management; access to water bird 'census' reports and other information on water bird monitoring.

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) offers access to many publications on issues of sustainable management of wetlands and biodiversity.

The Convention on Biological Diversity offers a biodiversity search engine, which indexes thousands of files from major biodiversity sites.

International Initiatives

The Global Dialogue on Water for Food and Environment is working to bring together the agriculture and environment communities. The objective of this initiative is to arrive at a knowledge-based consensus between these two sectors, on the present and future needs of water for food production, livelihoods, health and nature in developing countries.

The objective of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment is to document the condition of important ecosystems worldwide, the consequences of ecosystem change, and to develop options for response. The web site provides information about the initiative as well as access to publications.

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty which provides a framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. The web site provides information on national wetland policies, publications, case studies, a wetlands 'Experts Database' and other resources for wetland managers, such as the Ramsar 'Toolkit' for sustainable use of wetlands.

The River Basin Initiative on integrating biological diversity, wetland and river basin management is a joint initiative by the Ramsar Bureau and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). More information is available on the web site, hosted by Ramsar.
