RRR Business Model Testing in West Africa

To close the nutrient cycle which is an important regulatory ESS, the project will enhance safe use of excreta in agriculture which will also help to generate revenues for the sanitation value chain. To achieve that, this project will kick-start several production plants in Ghana. One plant (under WaFo project) capable of producing up to 1,000 tons per year of fecal based fertilizer material, Fortifer, will be constructed in Tema. The Wafo project will establish appropriate partnerships and a detailed business plan for the production through a PPP with the Municipality of Tema and a leading local sanitation enterprise. It will ensure the necessary product certification from the Ghanaian government and come up with a marketing plan for Fortifer and a replication plan in two other Ghanaian cities. This project will demonstrate that Fortifier technology improves the sustainability of the sanitation value chain by generating a revenue stream. From the program perspective, the actual implementation of a closed-loop process allows significant learning elements which will help similar projects and the formulation of investment plans. Under CapVal project, three additional plants will be constructed for FS, municipal solid waste (MSW) and wastewater reuse (200 tons per year of compost, 1,000 tons per year of fuel briquettes, and waste water use in aquaculture in in three other Ghanaian cities).

Fecal Sludge Business Testing in South Asia

The key objective is to develop and implement business models for reuse of fecal sludge and undertake feasibility studies of those business models. Like other RRR projects this one is also about closing water and nutrient loops which support regulatory ESS, while preventing environmental pollution. The project targets our partner WSP and the entire sanitation value chain with the aim of fecal sludge reuse business models improving the cost recovery aspect of sanitation and increased private sector participation in a sector dominated by public actors. The business models are designed to bring back the lost resources such as nutrients for soil amelioration and energy for household and businesses. The project assists in reduction of surface and ground water pollution caused by indiscriminate dumping of fecal sludge and will develop safety guidelines to ensure human health and environment safety through improved fecal sludge management. This project is implemented in Sri Lanka and India and it also includes a USAID/PEER funded PhD study on P recovery from Fecal Sludge and urine reuse in India. The project is analyzing the feasibility of RRR business models and setting up demonstration trials for fecal sludge pelletizing. The project is also testing pellets for different soils and crops.

To recover nutrients, water, and energy from agro-industrial and domestic waste streams 150+ RRR success stories were analyzed across the globe, and the feasibility of the best RRR business models is being tested in four cities for their replicability at scale, while safeguarding public health and the environment. The donor is waiting for the results to invest in the implementation of two promising business models. Like other RRR projects also this one is about closing water and nutrient loops which support regulatory ESS, while preventing environmental pollution. The associated EU/IFAD funded project component will focus on i) the assessment of institutional, policy, regulatory and financial drivers in the successful implementation of various RRR businesses in the selected regions and ii) the assessment of the economic impact of selected RRR businesses in terms of waste reduction, health, gender, water productivity, ecosystem services, climate change and other relevant indicators. The project will also study on demand of FAO options for safe wastewater use which were not yet tested.
