Adapt, cope and transform
External shocks, ranging from extreme weather to political unrest, are increasingly putting pressure on both the environment and smallholder farmers’ livelihoods. Worldwide, an estimated 870 million people are undernourished. More than half live in mostly rural areas in South Asia or sub-Saharan Africa and rely on subsistence farming for food and income. Strengthening the ability of farmers to adapt, cope with and even transform their livelihoods hinges on solutions that integrate healthy ecosystems and sustainable intensification of agricultural production.
