The Malikha and Maika rivers are both important tributaries of the Irrawaddy. The confluence of these two rivers is a site of great cultural meaning to Kachin society, who sometimes call it the heartland of their cultural identity. Dr. Oliver Springate-Baginski, lead researcher on the WLE Greater Mekong project Working together for a better Kachin landscape, discusses the significance of this location and how the Kachin people are at risk of losing it.
