Below are some opportunities for researchers working on sustainable agriculture issues, including grants, workshops and journal calls etc..

ThriveNet aims to provide research support, connect researchers with each other and with media and decision-makers, and share opportunities for WLE researchers and beyond. We hope it helps you communicate, so please feel free to post or contact us.

Thrive is offering grants for travel, local translation of communications tools (stay tuned), and media/Op-Ed/blog support.

GRANTS

  • ThriveNet researcher event grants: do you need funds to help you to present your research, gather data or learn new skills? Grants up to $1500, see ThriveNet Facebook or LinkedIn.
  • ThriveNet translation grants: to support communications products in local languages: coming soon, check facebook!
  • Nutrition research grants: The Nestlé Foundation supports research in human nutrition in low-income and lower middle-income countries. Deadlines in May.
  • Southeast Asia travel grants: SEARCA provides opportunities to qualified Southeast Asian nationals to participate and present papers in sustainable agricultural and rural development scientific conferences and fora, locally or internationally.
  • Food Sustainability Media Award: Organized by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and the BCFN Foundation, this award aims to recognize the work of journalists and communications professionals in reporting and communicating issues related to food security, sustainability, agriculture and nutrition. Submit published or unpublished work  by May 31 and win up to €10,000.
  • Global Challenges Research Fund Networking Grants: The Academy of Medical sciences awards up to £25,000 over 1 year to hold networking events and support collaborations between developing countries and the UK. Applications must be submitted by March 21.
  • Sustainable food academic grants: The 2018 BCFN YES! Research Grant Competition invites young PhD and postdoc researchers from any background and nationality to submit a research project that improves the sustainability of food systems. The award is a 20,000 € research grant applied to a one-year investigation. A maximum of three teams will be awarded the Research Grant. Apply by June 14.
  • Call for applications for MSc and PhD scholarship opportunities at the African Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Agriculture and Agribusiness Management - a World Bank sponsored project (ACE - II) in Egerton University.

CALLS FOR PAPERS/EVENTS

  • Nairobi Innovation Week 2018: Held from March 5-9 in Nairobi, the innovation week will bring together partners from government, private sector, development and research organizations to encourage innovation.
  • Sustainable Computing journal is producing a special issue on sustainable agriculture, and seeks original research articles on all kinds of smart and effective computation techniques and technologies for sustainable agriculture, including smart farming, green computing, AI, GIS and big data. Manuscripts are due on June 15.
  • Place-Based Food Systems 2018: Making the Case, Making It Happen is a two-day conference held on August 9 and 10 in Canada, highlighting the critical efforts of, and synergies between, researchers and community innovators who are working to forge vital place-based food systems. Submissions for presentation, paper and poster proposals are due March 31.
  • IAMO Forum 2018: Large-Scale Agriculture – For Profit And Society? will be held in Halle (Saale), Germany from June 27-29. Submit abstracts by March 4.
  • Tropentag 2018: Global food security and food safety: The role of universities: organised by Ghent University, this annual interdisciplinary conference on research in tropical and subtropical agriculture, natural resource management and rural development will be held from September 17-19. The deadline for abstract submissions is April 15.
  • NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development, in collaboration with CGIAR and the Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP), launched a call for proposals on generating insights that contribute to improving 'seed' systems in Asia and Sub-Sahara Africa. Pre-proposals are due April 12, with full proposals being due August 30.
  • Asia 2018: the 7th international conference and exhibition on water resources and renewable energy development in Asia will be held in Danang, Vietnam from March 13-15. Organised by the International Journal on Hydropower and Dams, this conference will bring together government representatives, researchers, owners and operators of water infrastructure and hydro-power plants, and other players from the private sector. 
  • OKP-NFP Fellowship: The Netherlands Fellowship Program (NFP), now the Orange Knowledge Program (OKP), is offering scholarships for short courses from Sep 24 until Oct 12 in the Netherlands for professionals working in agricultural research, agribusiness, rural advisory services, food etc. The deadline is March 21.  
  • Landscape 2018 in Berlin: the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), in cooperation with international partners, is hosting this conference in Berlin from March 12 to 16.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES

  • Join a migration-focused agriculture network: MARIS is a network of researchers and practitioners with a common interest in putting migration at the forefront of the global agricultural research agenda. For info contact: L.Debevec@cgiar.org
  • 2018 Synthesis Report on Water and Sanitation: To be launched in June 2018 by UN-Water – read advance briefings and other info.
  • Applications for the ReSource Award 2019 are open until March 16. If you can think of entrepreneurial initiatives that foster resilience in water management, please encourage them to apply. 
  • Postdoc Academy for Transformational Leadership is designed to train the next generation of leaders in sustainability and transformation research. Deadline for applications is April 15.
  • 2nd International Conference on Food and  Agricultural Economics will take place from April 27-28th in Alanya, Turkey. Registration open until April 10.
  • Rhodes Scholarships are now open to students from anywhere in the world. Applications open in early summer.   
  • Innovate in the agri-food sector and grow your idea into a successful business with global impact.  Agrytech Accelerator builds solutions spanning the entire food value chain. Join Batch II of the program and get the chance to receive up to $40k in grants and 1 year of support. Deadline is April 30.
