COP23

COP23, the UN Climate Change Conference, will be held in Bonn, Germany. WLE is participating through it's partners in a number of ways.

First, WLE researchers have contributed to an options paper, put together by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS). The first option is related to index-based insurance in South Asia and how this institutional innovation can contribute to smallholder farmer resilience in the face of climate change. The second is on business models for solar-powered irrigation, which allows farmers to use groundwater to combat weather uncertainty using a green energy source while putting in place economic incentives that keep them over-extracting this valuable resource.

Second, IWMI/WLE researchers Giriraj Amarnath and Alan Nicol will participate in a side event titled Is sustainable land and water management compatible with small-scale farming under climate change? on Wednesday, November 8 from 13:15-14:45. This session, convened by IWMI, CIP, CCAFS and RTB, will look at technical, social, and economic solutions that contribute to climate change adaptation in agriculturwe.

Finally, Luna Bharati of IWMI/WLE will be involved in a seminar, titled Ecosystem-based Adaptation Planning and Implementation, on Thursday, November 9 from 12:00-13:30. Organized by ZEF, UNU-EHS and IUCN, the seminar will look the practical implementation of ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) by exploring concrete examples and presenting both opportunities and challenges.
