Vladimir Smakhtin has 30 years of experience as a researcher and research manager in the area of water resources with an emphasis on environmental water management, climate and water resources variability and extremes, climate change, water storage and river basin management. He currently leads a research program on water availability, risk and resilience at IWMI with a focus on reducing water scarcity, managing water-related risks and disasters, and ensuring livelihoods and environmentally sustainable water management. He holds a PhD in hydrology and water resources from the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia.
