Hans Smit

Hans Smit is SNV’s Multi-country Coordinator for Commodities and Climate Change. He is responsible for designing and implementing the siting tool across SNV landscapes as part of the REDD+ Energy and Agriculture Program (REAP). Before joining SNV, Hans worked for 4 years on designing strategies that enable sustainable land use planning for agriculture and forestry with Unilever, Copernicus Institute and WWF International .

    Balancing competing land use goals

    Large scale agricultural expansion is a controversial topic in current development debates. Investments in land for agricultural production can potentially bring important economic and social benefits. Yet, increasing the agricultural areal often happens at the expense of forests, resulting in biodiversity losses and greenhouse gas emissions.
