Dr. Anthony Whitbread leads the research program Resilient Dryland Systems that works across the highly vulnerable agricultural landscapes of semi-arid South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa and aims at building more sustainable and resilient agricultural livelihoods. By understanding the farming system and its context, this team of scientists use applied research for development approaches to identify intervention strategies that that may be applied at scale to reach millions of farmers. An Australian by birth and raised in the semi-arid farming areas of Southern Australia, Anthony has spent most of his career working in mixed dryland systems in Australia, Southeast Asia and southern Africa. After receiving a PhD from the University of New England, Armidale in 1997 for a thesis on managing soil fertility in the crop rotations of the northern Australian grains belt, Anthony worked for the University until 1999 and then for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation until 2010. In 2011, he moved to Germany to take a chair position as professor of Crop Production Systems in the Tropics at the Georg-August-Universität in Göttingen.
