Many, especially vegetarians and politicians have no idea that animals are a natural and important part of human diets. Even Hindus, who are vegetarians by religious faith, generally drink milk. I started another discussion on LinkedIn, "can we have milk without meat" a few vegetarians put in remarks about how crops could produce more food. My point from the beginning is that cows (and other mammals) must produce newborns to produce milk. There is the other side; much of the earth's surface can not be cultivated economically - hills and mountains, poor soil (sand, etc.). However, that same land is often very available for grass an other food for ruminant.
My work is primarily with the waste from growing crops. Mushrooms can make nutritious food from it, but the world produces more crop waste than we can used for mushrooms. Mushrooms are protein, vitamins and minerals, but few calories, so they can do little for food-energy needs.
